GYPSY

1959 - Broadway Theater

Jerome Robbins was the one choreographer I was never comfortable working for. He was responsible in hiring me for "Bells Are Ringing" and I knew he liked my work in "Ankles Aweigh", but I felt he was never quite satisfied with anything I did. I wasn't one of those he picked on and tortured as I had witnessed in both companies Bells Are Ringing and Gypsy; nor was I one he ever had so much as a smile for. A pat on the back from Jerry would have gone a long way. It never happened. "Gypsy" was a great show and ran 702 performances at the Broadway Theater. For me personally, it was neither, rewarding or inspiring. Aside from being one of the farm boys, my claim to fame in the show was understudying a cow, - both ends.
